The Eastside Tucson Writing Room Begins Their 13th Year
Zooming on January 6. What a wonderful start to our 13th year. I attribute the longevity and growth of our group to the history we have accrued with consistent meeting and the supportive atmosphere of our group. And that takes members – showing up on Tuesdays, sharing what’s happening in our writing life, and what tips and tools work for each of us, which also work for the rest of us in obvious and subtle ways.
Wordsmiths Gather
As wordsmiths, we have the power to teach, to influence, to entertain, to satisfy our readers and ourselves. We started this 2026 year with a go-around of our focus words, one to three words that will guide each of us in our craft of writing this year. Talk about wordsmiths! Look at those words! I printed out the list and have it on my bulletin board to remind me of the power of my words. Also, knowing the other writers who stated their intention, it gives me a whole bunch of inspiration and energy for writing.
Calling Wordsmiths
Next Tuesday, January 13 is our January hybrid meeting at Sally Lanyon’s house. The email with zoom link and contact for address and RSVP will come from SALLY. See you there!
Click here to contact Ethel if you are interested in joining us. No Fee. No Cell phones, No Interruptions. Just you, your writing idea, and laptop or pad.
Ethel Lee-Miller blogs regularly about people, the power of words, and her writing life. She retired after 30 years of teaching, and semi-retired from coaching, and professional editing. Founder of the Eastside Tucson Writing Room based in Tucson AZ, she’s posted 100s of blogs, and is the author of Thinking of Miller Place, and Seedlings, Stories of Relationships. These days she writes to inspire, to connect with folks, teaching about the power of words, gather writers together, and for the pure enjoyment of it. Ethel enjoys teaching, speaking, and storytelling at Odyssey Storytelling, Artists Standing Strong Together, Tucson Tellers of Tales Center for Spiritual Living Tucson, her latest endeavor New Story Pod, and anywhere there’s a mic or a Zoom room.

Somehow I feel that having one to three words as themes to guide you through the year is so much more useful than a resolution. I think of a resolution as more of a goal, which is usually a good thing. However, people tend to put so much pressure on themselves with a resolution that when it is delayed, or fails for whatever reason, it is depressing. Having “your word(s)” of the year is also goal oriented, but is more open ended. Since declaring mine this year, which was only one week ago, I have made note of THREE auspicious opportunities! Perhaps declaring your words helps manifest them too?
HI Dawn, I agree. Resolution can be a trigger word for me, holding a small but heavy weight of inappropriate guilt if I don’t follow through. I’m for the 3 words too. Years ago my dance instructor, the talented and kind Mayo Alanen, said to pick a winning word before we went on the dance floor for my very first exhibition dance. I honestly can’t remember the word but a feeling of ease and confidence floods through me even now thinking about it. Thanks for “stopping by.” Ethel
Dawn, AND more auspicious opps are sure to come!
