The Art of Teaching Writing by Lucy Calkins came to me via teaching writing process to second graders. Most seven and eight year olds believe they are writers. Having writing time every day in the classroom built a habit in them, and me, to write. We used Julia Cameron’s idea of morning pages, Calkin’s suggestions for writing sharing and conferencing, and the natural enthusiasm of young writers who write in an environment that tells them they have something important to say. What are your writing classics?
